The cheers, embraces and South African flags said it all as Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira arrived home at OR Tambo International Airport on 17 August 2026, following her historic victory to become Africa’s first female WBC World Champion.
Ferreira defeated Canada’s Caroline Veyre on 15 August in Atlanta, USA, securing her place in African boxing history and marking a significant milestone for women’s boxing on the continent.
Her homecoming was met with an emotional welcome from family, loved ones, Boxing South Africa (BSA), the BSA Women in Boxing Committee and supporters of the sport. The celebration recognised not only Ferreira’s achievement, but the journey, sacrifice and determination behind her historic success.
BSA Chairperson Ms Ayanda Khumalo said Ferreira’s achievement was a moment of immense pride for South African boxing and women in sport.
“Bernice has not only returned home as a world champion; she has returned home having made history and shown what is possible when talent, courage, discipline and determination come together. We are incredibly proud of her.”
BSA Women in Boxing Committee Chairperson Rina Subotzky Jude said Ferreira’s achievement should inspire the next generation of female boxers and strengthen efforts to create greater opportunities for women in the sport.
Ferreira’s historic achievement represents more than an individual victory. It is a landmark moment for African women’s boxing and a powerful reminder that South African boxers can reach the highest level of the sport.
Africa has its first female WBC World Champion — and her name is Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira.
