Tribute to Broadcasting Legend Phumlani Msibi
Saturday, 21 June 2025
Boxing South Africa is saddened by the news of the untimely departure of broadcasting giant, boxing commentator and analyst, Phumlani Msibi who passed away on Friday, 20 June 2025.
Msibi, who was 57 years at the time of his passing is reported to have passed away after a short illness. In Msibi, boxing has not only lost one of its favourite personalities but an encyclopaedia. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends, colleagues in sport and SuperSport International. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.
Phumlani Msibi who also worked for the public broadcaster SABC, started at SuperSport as a ring announcer in the late nineties (90s), notably doing commentary in both isiZulu and English.
Msibi’s versatility saw him making name for himself in football, and at times horses’ commentary and there is no doubt that he has left an indelible mark in the commentary box and in the sporting fraternity.
We will always remember Bra Phumz’s energy, his presence and voice during boxing tournaments. We will miss his depth insight of the sport of boxing, his easy-going personality, and the manner he delivered his commentary. Msibi was a consummate professional who earned respect from his colleagues domestically and abroad.
Thank you, Bra Phumz, for everything and all the memories. Thank you to your family to have been selfless, sharing you with us all these years. Our tv rooms, especially on weekends, will no longer be the same and the sport is poorer today following your
passing.
Rest in Power Champ!
Enkosi kakhulu Bra Phumz!
