Weekend Wrap

The Weekend Wrap Hard-hitting Phaphama Rhonorono was crowned South African Welterweight champion after he stopped favourite Wassim Chellan in the second round on Friday, 19 September 2025 at Wynberg Military Base.

Rhonorono victory, ended what was a long drought at Madoda Dyonase’s gym in Mthatha and could inspire the next generation of champions in the region. Notable, Rhonorono is also product of development initiative by Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and Boxing South Africa.

Manenberg born, Wassim Chellan was rated no. 1 in the Welterweight division going to the bout, with an impressive record of nine (9) wins (four by knockout and with only one loss. The loss that tainted otherwise a perfect record came on what was an unsuccessful attempt to win world title in Germany where he challenged Adel El Gaarmoui for both IBO International and WBF world titles.

Chellan was fully aware that Eastern Cape born, Phaphama Ronorono known for his raw power, would not be a walk on the park. Despite being less experienced, Phaphama went to the bout boosting a 100%-win record after four bouts. Highly regarded, and if his last win against Tsumbo Mbedzi was anything to go by, boxing fanatics that came in numbers to the Arena got their money’s worth.

The Welterweight bout headlined the boxing tournament organised by Jackie Brice, and sponsored by Western Cape Department of Sports, Arts and Culture launching the ongoing Women In Boxing Series. The Mthatha born came on top, as he dropped Chellan. The referee waved off, handing Ronorono his fifth and stoppage win in five. The card also featured Lunga Sitemela who had no problems brushing aside Mvuzo Kotobe.

Other results on the night went as follows:

Ntombokuqala Tolashe bt Matshidiso Mokebisi

Sibulele Soboois bt Zizo Skoti

Olwethu Mkhathala bt Emma Mohono

TLB Promotions cancelled the boxing tournament that was due to take place on Saturday, 20 September 2025 in North West’s Sun City. The tournament headlined, Aphiwe Mboyiya and Sibusiso Zingange, but late cancellation meant all eyes shifted and focussed on Fourways Farmers Market in Johannesburg on Sunday, 21 September 2025.

Zimbabwean, Owen ‘The Truth’ Venganayi overcame challenge from Lukholo Dlangalavu to win via unanimous points decision over six rounds in the featherweight division.

The main event lived to expectations as both boxers had a go at one another with Venganayi remaining undefeated, 8-0. Free State born, Dlangalavu was looking to build from his last win against Ameen Khan in October 2024.

The co-main event featured Tendai Sinakoma (Zimbabwe) in the light heavyweight who had an easy route knocking down Vuyisa Kosana who refused to continue after the first round.

Meanwhile, it took only 22 seconds in the first round for Malawian, Mayamiko Mozland to knockdown South African, Trinity Nxumalo in the Catchweight division.

Probably the fight of the afternoon featured Njabulo Mhlungu and Shameeg William as both boxers provided the enthusiastic crowd with an incredible six rounds. Williams took the win by split decision: 58-56, 56-58, 60-54! Both boxers, Njabulo Mhlongo an orthodox, and a determined, Shameeg William left the Arena with lot of admires after what was a scintillating bout.
