Nika ‘The Sting” Kumalo is one of South Africa’s favourite boxing legends, one of the select few fighters to hold two South African titles. He produced many memorable performances in the late eighties (80s) and early nineties (90s) but just did not make it to the top after losing two cracks at the WBO welterweight title.
Boxing legend, Welcome Ncita is one of the best sporting personalities ever to come out of South Africa. The former IBF Super Bantamweight Champion, affectionately known as, “The Hawk” had an impressive total of forty-four fights, losing just three and winning one in an illustrious career that spanned for almost two decades. Ncita made six successful defences of his IBF junior featherweight world title, was undefeated in thirty-two fights at some stage, making him one of the most decorated boxers of our generation. He sat down with Boxing SA Media to look back on some of the moments in his career.
Phumelela Cafu has told Boxing SA Media that his victory against Japanese, Kosei Tanaka that landed him WBO junior-bantamweight title earlier this month is only just the beginning. Cafu (26) who went to Japan had an impressive record of 10 wins, eight via knockouts, and three draws, was awarded the WBO title at the Arieke Arena, Tokyo, Japan by a split decision and that he dropped the champion, Tanaka in the fifth round could have done him a world of good.

This past weekend was a great one for boxing which did not only bring yet another champion, in IBO Welterweight champion, Tulani Mbenge but also three successful tournaments in Alexandra, Gauteng, in Qonce, Eastern Cape, and Cabo Island in Cape Town.

Hatfield, Pretoria - Boxing South Africa is confident about Tulani Mbenge’s victory as he embarks on yet another international mission to challenge for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) Welterweight title on Saturday, 19 October 2024 at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Hackney Wick, the North-Eastern neighbourhood of London, England.
In terms of the South African Boxing Act (Act 11 of 2001), the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr. G McKenzie invites members of the Boxing fraternity and the general public to nominate persons to serve as members of the Board of Boxing South Africa. Nominated candidates should possess among other things on their expertise and knowledge of women’s and amateur boxing, media and marketing related matters and development and transformation; managerial, financial, legal expertise; marketing; fundraising; corporate governance, as well as a willingness to render community service. The remuneration of the appointed nominees is in line with the remuneration rates stipulated on the National Treasury guidelines/framework.
Gauteng was a hive of activity this past weekend as three sanctioned tournaments by the Regulator were hosted in the province.
The boxing festivities kicked off on Saturday, 14 September 2024, with a highly competitive and exciting development tournament at The Dome, Midrand promoted by Xaba boxing promotions showcasing rising talents like Moyisi Booi and Ndabezinhle Phiri. Both boxers entered the ring undefeated.
Moyisi Boy was an unlucky one, as Phiri emerged victorious, delivering a knockout to hand Moyisi his first defeat.
Fireworks are expected to fly on Friday, 20 September 2024 as former IBO African Super Flyweight Champion and current WBO Global Super Flyweight Champion, Sikho Nqothe takes on Namibian Jafet Amukwa in an international bout at Box Camp Booysens, Johannesburg on Friday evening brought by Boxing 5 Promotions.
Action starts at 19h00.
Nqothole is looking to use the fight to redeem himself after a tough international loss when Calixto Bibiano in Mexico defeated him earlier this year.
Nqothole is currently rated 17th by World Boxing Council (WBC), 11th in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and 15th in the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
In a Main Supporting Bout, a thrilling match Almighty Moyo (Zimbabwe) takes on Faraday Mukondila.
Meanwhile, in the flyweight division, hard hitting Frank Sotomela (Eastern Cape) will take on Thamsanqa Cele (Gauteng)
Rounding out the card is the current Gauteng Lightweight Champion, Katlego ‘Kats’ Khanyisa who will feature in the co-main event.
